Pot Metal Repair

What people are saying about James Ruther’s pot metal repair services –

Hey James,

Just wanted to thank you again for the excellent work you did on my license plate frame. Also, the plating work by Dave and his crew was great!

I can’t wait to get it on the car!

Our crucifix that had been in the family for generations was damaged in an earthquake.  This cross came over from Europe with my parents in around 1920 and originally belonged to their grandparents.  The cross was constructed of spelter or pot metal.  It was an antique but not very valuable in the monetary sense.  The cross was part of our heritage and was most valuable to our family.

James Ruther was kind enough to perform repairs that resulted in what can only be call a “Perfect restoration.”  We are not able to put our gratitude into words.  Mr. Ruther’s skill, professionalism, and charity will become part of the legacy story with our family heirloom.  Our family cross has returned and once again graces our dining room.  Thank you so much, we shall never forget your generosity.

I contacted James with pictures of window frames from my 48 Pontiac convertible. One frame was severed completely in two. One was bent and stretched out of square, and the two vent window frames had screw holes that needed to be plugged and a broken pieces that needed to be rewelded. After brief email discussion of the process and scope, It became very clear that James has full confidence in his ability to repair Pot Metal. I was very encouraged as my parts are almost non existent and when you find them, they are normally in very bad shape and very expensive. Repairing mine was the most reasonable option (by teh way, James is very responsive to email and or text communications). I followed the shipping instructions on his website, I sent my parts off to him. James contacted me to let me know the parts were received, then a few days later, he contacted me when he began working on the repairs. Once repairs were completed, James sent multiple pictures (very clear) of each piece, showing areas of repair and showing fitment between adjoining pieces. The repairs are fantastic! I gave James my approval of what I could see in the pictures and with my approval, James sent me a detailed invoice for his work. I then used the payment process on James’ website and within a few days my parts arrived. Well packaged, clearly marked “FRAGILE”, no damage to shipping container at all. I must say, the repair are beyond first class. The choice to use James was the right choice. I will use him again. He is easy to work with, very professional, and probably the best craftsman at this type of repair I have ever met. Thank you James for perfect repair! I look forward to working with you again in the future.

I used James Ruther’s pot metal repair service to repair a broken 1947 mercury horn ring and 2 Appleton spotlight bases. I was concerned that the items may not be repairable but, after a few quick text messages and a short phone conversation, I was convinced the he could not only absolutely handle the repair but, also really cared that the part came back to me and I was satisfied with the overall outcome. Well the finished parts arrived today and I could not be happier with the result. The repair looks strong and stable and I’m sure will suit my needs just fine and last for years to come. I have to say it was really refreshing to give my business to someone who does what they say they are going to do, does it well, and has it done when they say they are going to. I have been plagued time and time again by businesses who were supposed to be professional and have really let me down. This was not the case at all with James, he kept me posted on progress, was very knowledgeable, professional and one hell of a nice guy. I would highly recommend him for any repairs on pot metal that you may need, he really does care and gives each repair the kind of attention to detail that seems to have fallen by the wayside and is often missing in the world today. James came through for me in big way and I can’t that him enough for his fair pricing and stellar work. Needless to say, I absolutely will be sending any kind of pot metal repairs I need his way. So before you think that pot metal part is junk, check with James first, you might just be surprised I know I was…

“Hi James, I received the part back today. Job well done!  I’m very pleased with the work! I referred your name to the body man that is working on my car and he said he would send work your way when he had the need for pot metal welding.

Thanks again.”

James, thank you for the repair on the pot metal horse you repaired, I have never seen pot metal repaired like this, you are an artist, can’t even tell where it was repaired. And the way you you smoothed it out, it’s a beautiful job!

Thank you very much.

I have a 1932 dodge F10 depot hack. The headlight switch actuator that is in the center of the steering wheel had snapped off. The arm is attached to a plate that mounts to a shaft under the horn button. That shaft passes through the steering column to the headlight switch at the end of the column. The jest of this is that the headlight switch activator is not available. I searched for a long time with no luck. Then I found James. Mine was to far gone for him to make a strong enough repair to function. So he was able to put it back together and make a mold with which he made a replacement. I now have a fully functional, perfect duplicate of the original.

Fast forward 6 months. My radiator cap was in rough shape. The piece with the locking tabs, that hook into the radiator, was attached to a “knob” that has the DB emblem and it the radiator ornament. The attach point was rounded off so the lock tab could not turn to engage the radiator. If I tried to use it, and got it to catch, there was a good chance I would not be able to get it off. I sent it to James. He rebuilt the mount point for the lock plate and it is now fully functional and safe to use.

Parts that I thought were going to be a lost cause are visually perfect and fully functional. The quality of the work is superb. James is very good to work with and easy to get hold of and the turn around time was quick.

Thank you James
Paul

James is amazing!  I came across a 65 year old child’s cowboy belt that belonged to my Uncle and set out to have it repaired so I could gift it to his first grandchild.  I tried a cobbler and 2 different jewelers who told me that the belt was pot metal and could never be repaired.  I turned to google and came across James and his pot metal repair company.   I was able to ship the belt to James who worked on it and sent it back to me.  This family heirloom will now be enjoyed by another generation.   I can not wait for Barrett to put it on with her Wrangler Jeans and head to the stables!  I can not thank James enough for his kindness and craftsmanship!

I had a drive pulley on my drill press break. It was part of a “Reeves Drive” variable speed set up. When I found out that part was no longer available from manufacturer I contacted James to see about a repair. My local machine shop had already turned me down. Upon receiving the part James said he could weld it up. After completing the repair he put into lathe to true up. There is a point also, how many people care enough about their work to true up finished work in the lathe…unfortunately because of the poor quality of metal, the pulley shattered in the lathe. At this point I thought I was out of luck for the drill press but to my surprise James made me a new pulley from scratch. Talk about a stand up business man, wow. Now my drill press is back up and running smooth thanks to James. I would highly recommend his work to anyone needing pot metal repair. He was a pleasure to work with.

James – The handle arrived today. I was waiting  for it to arrive, before writing the review.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Attached is a picture of the dresser draw handle restored by Pot metal Repair. There are 4 handles in the picture but only one was repaired. In short, if I did not know it had been repaired, I would never know it had!
The only thing I regret about doing business with Pot metal Repair is that I did not find them sooner.
Thanks for a job well done and fairly priced.
A happy customer in Texas!

If you think your piece can’t be repaired, if you want to maintain the integrity of an original factory part, this is the place to have all your pot metal repairs done! I sent in a toy cap gun from the 50’s that I was told could not be repaired. This piece held some great sentimental value and I was concerned if it would hold up to the repairs it needed. James took extra care of it and returned it AS GOOD AS NEW! GREAT service, GREAT communication, and I look forward to any future repairs with his company!

Regarding a project I recently (Jan 2019) used James Ruther’s Pot Metal Repair services:

I collect many items from the 1920’s made from spelter, better known as pot metal. When marble statue figures were in fashion, they were expensive and very few. Bronze castings of those began to make items more available in Europe in the late 1800’s and early 1900 to those of great means. When a few companies in the US began using pot metal to cast figures and products, lamps, ashtrays, floor stands, etc. in the 1920s and 30s, things literally became more available to the masses.

Marble is heavy and huge, bronze is heavy and stable from most common damage, pot metal, well not so much. It’s prone to damage from use, being knocked over, store in the attics heat and cold, and so on. The items I collect have grown in value however and a once common $25 piece is now $350, and more rare lamps were $350 and now are $1200 and up. Honestly I’ve stayed away from buying damaged simply because not many people can repair spelter, and if so, not very well.

I recently purchased a lamp in good shape, however by the time it arrived the lamp base was now bent and cracked into several pieces. Since insurance paid the claim I now had an investment of zero and thought, lets give this a try. I found James Ruther and his Pot Metal Repair service on-line and we discussed the item, and so I sent it off. James provide his insight, a quote, and I agreed to proceed with honestly little knowledge of knowing exactly what to receive back. James’ feedback on-line was excellent but I’ve heard that before from others. However, throughout the entire process James provided updates, timeline, photos of work in process. And along the lines I thought, wow this is really taking shape.

What I got back was Amazing! Not only is the lamp base like new in all aspects, level and unbent, small cracked pieces and challenging areas around screw holes, etc. were all rebuilt. This is not just talent and skill, this also requires an artists eye, and James possess all of those traits.

I’m more than pleased. And although I don’t hope to have damaged pot metal pieces in the future, if and when I do, without a doubt, I will contact James with confidence assured that his work will be worth the time and investment.
